Personal Finance Basics

Most children do not have a complete understanding of the basic financial skills and concepts necessary to effectively function in society. So children are biased by the experiences around them. This lens by which they view the world is most likely incomplete. Standard school curriculum does not invest sufficient time on personal finance either.

We have developed an 8 session program primarily for students 12 years old and up. The program will cover the basics of budgeting, saving and borrowing. Students will work backwards from a potential first career job to their current age. This technique will allow the student to learn various financial topics through the lens of achieving a personal objective. We will use a personally chosen career path and college degree to teach the following financial concepts:

  • The value of money
  • What is a bank and how do they work
  • What are taxes and how do they work
  • Necessary vs. Discretionary spending
  • The concept of risk
  • The difference between short term and long term
  • Savings vs. Spending
  • The power of compounding
  • What is the stock market and how does it work
  • Principles of Investing

Successful completion of this program will give students a far greater appreciation for what the journey to financial independence will be like. They should also have a keener perspective on their current financial situation.

Math Mastery

Many students struggle to keep up with math. Unfortunately, it is an easy subject to fall behind on. Most math material builds on a foundation of earlier material. As the missing building blocks accumulate, the challenge compounds and the student loses confidence.

Summer presents a perfect opportunity to fill-in the missing building blocks and solidify the foundation so the student can move forward. A summer math program can also be used as a jumpstart into the next school year.

Utilizing Tutor Doctor's proprietary audio-visual program, one of our tutors will work with the student at a learning pace suitable to them. The program includes a workbook and CD. Playing the CD while following along with the book, the student can cover the a section multiple times until they are comfortable with the material. One of Tutor Doctor's qualified math tutors will manage the work progress and provide additional instruction to ensure student success.

The following modules are available for this program:

  • Algebra I
  • Algebra II
  • Algebra III
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Calculus
